Some Questions from Chapter 1.
Chapter 1. Nooadayz
Dundee nowadays, is much like any other post-industrial City. Vast expanses of Brownfield sites are being set upon by pieces of public art, intent on bringing a bit of culture to an otherwise derelict skelp of land. Newcastle, Liverpool, Glasgow, and Dundee, not to mention the others, have transformed themselves from depressed monocultures to communities in favour of international cultural exhibits, expensive café’s, and a happy change from the drudgery of the past.

Dundee’s explosion in adult education has helped to fuel the cultural change in the City, and with combined further education placements being in the region of 21,000, it’s hardly a surprise. Nooadayz, there are more Dundonians in full-time adult education than in any other period in the City’s history.

Having said all that, most Dundonians live a fair distance from the ‘Spoilt’ City Centre areas of the Waterfront and the West End, and some never venture into these areas from one year to the next. After all, the likes of Whitfield, Douglas, and Lochee, have very little in common with the ‘Spiyult Kwartir’. Not surprisingly, you won’t see many West End residents, or fresher students heading out to those areas in search of an entertaining evening out.

Some things however, don’t change. Saturday nights for example are still the prime time to get rat-arsed drunk and make a complete arse of yourself, if you are of a certain age, and the City still has a plethora of pubs and clubs to choose from if you are inclined to this sort of activity.

Until recently, Dundee had one of the best Pub-Music scenes in the country, where you could get high on Dundee Soul almost every night of the week. Now that the emphasis has changed from Pubs to Arts, you are more apt to hear Jazz or Folk music played live. The venues for live music might have become thin on the ground, but the local musicians themselves are still in melodic abundance, waiting in the wings for the regeneration of the local music venues.
